As the economy is still uncertain, many people are worried about the future. This has led to a drop in the mortgage rates around the country. For the tenth time in eleven weeks, the rates have fallen. They are on par with the lowest rates ever recorded. This has also led many people to begin refinancing their homes.

The low mortgage rates are enticing many people into seeking the lower rates. The bad news is that the new low rates are still not helping the slumping housing markets. Home sales are still low and they don’t seem to be improving anytime soon.

Deep below the surface of the earth, 33 men are trapped in a Chilean copper mine. The men have been trapped since august 5 when a landslide blocked their exit back to the earth’s surface. There are plans to build an escape tunnel for the men, but the effort will be time consuming.

The men have been reached by a small hole in which a camera has been lowered. They are also being fed through the hole and ventilation is being provided. Family members have high hopes for their rescue. It will be nice to see the miners return to their loved ones.

The country of Pakistan is experiencing some of the worst flooding they’ve ever had. The rains have caused waters to rise and have wiped out thousands of homes and fields. The government has not been able to give relief to the people and this has caused much dissention. Adding to the problem is the confirmation of at least one case of cholera.

Cholera is a water-borne disease that can be very deadly. Quick action is needed to prevent the spread of the disease. The international community is helping with relief funds, but the country needs much more to combat the deadly floods.

In the era of government bailouts, it’s not surprising that many taxpayers are crying foul when they hear about CEO’s of companies who get large severance packages for leaving their company. This recently happened when CEO Mark Hurd left Hewlett-Packard. He reportedly got more than $30 million dollars.

Mr. Hurd stepped down from HP after a series of allegations that he falsified expense reports. He is also accused of sexual harassment. Shareholders are furious that he will walk with so much money. I think it’s a shame that these people can take advantage of their situations and still be rewarded.

The American presence in Afghanistan is still ongoing. Soldiers are fighting the Taliban in an effort to win the peoples hearts and minds in an ideological battle. The war has raged on for nearly nine years and shows little sign of being over soon. Americans are getting tired of spending money and lives on a losing battle.

This month, 66 U.S. soldiers were killed in action. This number is even higher than last months 60 killed. Commanders say the higher numbers of dead are a result of increased fighting. I hope this war is going somewhere and we will see some tangible results soon.

Ever since the giant oil spill into the Gulf of Mexico, many have wondered whether or not the chief executive of BP would be able to keep his job. While the verdict is not in yet, the common consensus is that he will soon be in the unemployment line. Those in the know say that he will be replaced in the coming months.

BP really needs to change its image. I think it would be good for them to replace their leadership and move toward a new direction. I hope the company will choose a new leader wisely and begin to repair their battered image.

In London, today was a day to remember. The Ministry of Defense unveiled its newest combat aircraft called Taranis. The aircraft is being touted as the future of unmanned stealth technology and has many people around the world interested. The aircraft uses technology that makes virtually undetectable and no pilot is needed.

The long-range aircraft can be controlled from virtually anywhere in the world and can carry out a number of different missions. Surveillance, intelligence, and reconnaissance can all be done with the new jet. It can also drop bombs and missiles if needed. This technology has long been in the works and is nearing perfection. Be careful world, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise!

He was 80 years old and is known for his leadership in the baseball realm as the owner of the Yankees. Known to many as “the boss” George went through many managers during his stint as the owner.

As the owner of the club since 1973, he compiled an amazing record of 7 World Series Championships and 11 American League Pennants. Known to all as a generous man, the baseball world will miss him as well as his surviving family.

As the oil continues to pollute the Gulf of Mexico, scientists are seeing some surprising animal behavior. The animals are fleeing the oil and coming in close to the shore. This is unusual as they are not known to leave their natural habitats easily. It may lead to further problems scientists say.

One problem could be that the fish gathering in large numbers could deplete the natural oxygen levels. This will cause a massive die-off if some of the animals don’t leave the area. Another problem is that it will be easy for predators to pick off fish and mammals in shallow water. The best solution would be that the spill is stopped so that the healing process can begin.

Gold, iron, Lithium, and copper are all minerals that are thought to be found in large quantities in the country of Afghanistan. This was reported by the U.S. Military after several geologists made the discoveries. Some strategists in the region believe this new information could change the future of Afghanistan and its role in the world.

Afghanistan is certainly a very poor country. Finding these assets could give hope for the future and jobs for people who need the work. Of course, there will be many arguments over who will control these assets, but many hope the problems can be worked out. I am glad the poor people of this country have finally gotten some good news!
