It’s That Time Of The Year

Besides watching football on Thanksgiving Day, my of my favorite things to watch is the news about those who wait for a store to open for days before Black Friday. I wonder of these people are really as crazy as they seem. Going through all that trouble just to shop??

I think I’ll do what I always do and that is to stay home and order my things on the internet. Why fight the crowds when I can have what I need delivered to my house. These people are just not thinking to clearly. They are fun to watch though.

My Hands

One of the joys in my life is taking on home improvement projects. I like working with my hands and seeing the results every day when I am done. That’s why when my wife suggested that we might want to fix the backsplash over our kitchen counter, I was all for the idea. The backsplash we have now is waterlogged and rotting away. We thought that using tiles would give us a better look and be more functional.

There are many advantages to using tile. One great thing is that it is waterproof. That means that you can use them even in places where there is a good chance that water will be present. Another advantage is that they are easy to clean. You can also use them on the floor or the wall. We have always been happy with the bathroom tiles in our home, so we thought that using them in the kitchen would work out fine.

The only decision we had left was to figure out where to get the tiles. As usual, we turned to the internet. I found a good site that had a good selection of quality tiles. I even found subway tiles on the site. I am sure that I will enjoy the challenge of putting the tiles up. It will be nice to know that I can use my own hands to improve my home!

Thanksgiving Is Almost Here

Now that I have moved out from my parents house, Thanksgiving just isn’t the same.  I don’t get to go home every year either.  That’s the worst part of growing up I think.

I remember how amazing the house smelled the day before and the day of Thanksgiving.  Mom would start making potato salad or macaroni, deviled eggs and all of those cakes and pies the day before Thanksgiving.  Then on Thanksgiving day, she would get up way before any of us even thought of getting up to start the turkey and ham.

By the time we all woke up, she had it all in the oven and we would wake up starving because the house smelled so good.  We usually ate around 2 and the table to overflowing with food.  Green beans, corn, yeast rolls, and some years, we had roast duck instead of turkey.  Oh how I miss those days!!!  I can still smell my mothers cooking when I think about Thanksgiving.

Scary Days and Nights

The moon is full in the sky at this time of year. It’s really huge and can be menacing when the clouds are just right. It sets the tone for Halloween and that’s fine with me. I always enjoy trying to give the kids a little scare before they get their treats. It’s a tradition that my father started.

When I was little we always decked out the yard with all manner of scary things. I have taken over this tradition and added to our collection of stuff. My yard will be the envy of all others on the block. I am waiting for tomorrow night!

Crazy Heart

While visiting at my folks the other evening, I found a copy of the book, Crazy Heart, on the bookshelf in my brother’s room. I asked if I could borrow it and he said to take it and pass it on.

I watched the movie with the same title when it came out last year. I thought the movie was outstanding and Jeff Bridges made the main character totally believable.I know a little about the music business, as my dad was a musician and we always had a house full of band members, singers and other entertainers coming into the house carrying their instruments in their nice utility case and boxes of all shapes and sizes.

It will be hard to read the book without picturing Jeff Bridges as the main character. But maybe that’s a good thing. I think it helps to vividly picture the characters while you read.

So far the book seems to be following the movie pretty closely. I just got into it last night for a couple of chapters. I plan to read the book and then re-watch the movie to compare the two.
